How to Caulk Your Exterior Windows

How to Caulk Your Exterior Windows

Today, our maintenance video will concentrate on learning to caulk the exterior of your windows. It’s important to make sure the exterior of your home stays properly sealed. Periodically, you will want to check the caulking at the window frames and the exterior siding of your home. If you see any signs of cracking or missing caulk you will want to re-caulk the area and touch up the paint as necessary. Watch this helpful step by step video for more information.

What You Need to Caulk the Exterior Windows:

  • A caulking gun
  • Latex caulk
  • A rag or caulking tool

Tips:

  • This maintenance should happen on a yearly basis where you will walk the exterior of your home and inspect the windows to see if there is any areas that need to be caulked.
  • Make sure not to caulk the weep holes on each side of the windows. The weep holes are intended to weep water if any water gets inside the frame.

How to Caulk Your Exterior Windows:

  • First, you want to cut the tip of the caulk (there is a slot where you cut it)
  • Second, put your caulk tube in and tighten it up
  • Third, line the caulking gun with the crack and pull the trigger on the caulking gun to release the caulk
  • Fourth, smooth out the caulk with the rag, caulking tool or your finger.
