Earlier this month, the Residential Energy Services Network \u2013 RESNET announced that over 360,000 homes in the United States in 2023 were rated with a HERS Index Score, measuring a home\u2019s energy efficiency. This pushed the total number of homes HERS Rated in the US to date to over 3.9 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The previous record from 2022 was 339,927 homes HERS rated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The average HERS Index Score in 2023 was 57. This is 43% more efficient than a home built as recently as 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like the miles-per-gallon calculation for cars, a HERS Index Score<\/a> allows for a uniform estimate of a home\u2019s energy consumption and provides buyers\/owners with a reference point for how energy efficient it is as compared to other homes. Heating, cooling, and water heating constitute the largest cost of homeownership outside of the mortgage loan, and the HERS Index Score can help homebuyers anticipate utility costs before purchasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
